All workers have the right to breathe clean air regardless of the occupation they choose. Many workers are protected by smoke-free policies in the workplace, but bar and restaurant workers stand out as notably under protected, and bear a heavy health burden from secondhand smoke exposure. Regular exposure to secondhand smoke can lead to cardiovascular problems, respiratory problems, immune system problems, developmental problems during pregnancy and cancer.
Secondhand smoke has been estimated to result in at least 38,000 annual deaths in the United States and between 600 and 1,000 annual deaths in South Carolina.
