Pee Dee Healthy People Coalition is a grassroots effort to improve the health of the citizens in the Pee Dee region. The coalition was formed in February 1994 by people concerned about health issues affecting their community. Over the years, various health issues have been addressed. Currently, the coalition is addressing the issue of tobacco use and secondhand smoke. The mission of Smoke Free Florence is to educate decision-makers on the harmful effects of secondhand smoke and to promote an environment in which all Florence residents have the opportunity to breathe smoke free air. Members of the coalition include organization representatives and community members concerned with the use of tobacco in Florence, South Carolina.
Policy Goal: Voluntary Elimination of Environmental Tobacco Smoke Objective: Increasing the number of worksites that adopt and enforce clean indoor air policies, including smoking restrictions around entrances. These worksites include: restaurants and bars, recreational facilities, healthcare facilities, childcare and eldercare facilities, and other businesses. Policy Goal: Tobacco Cessation Objective: Increasing the number of healthcare providers (medical/dental) who adopt the Clinical Practice Guideline for Treating Use and Dependence issued by the U. S. Department of Health and Human Services as a standard protocol and establish a referral system for the SC Quitline.
