Smoke Free

Thank Your Council for a Smoke Free Ordinance!

Please express your appreciation to those who made your smoke-free community possible.

Efforts to change or erradicate these ordinances continue once they are passed and your appreciation and support go a long way towards helping to keep them in place.

A simple note or email to your Town, City or County Council will do. Find their contact information on your city, town or county's website (Search your town or county name on Goodsearch and follow the link).

Please urge your friends and families to do the same by making them aware of this webpage.

Can't think of what to say? Here are some starting points, alter it to suit your needs:

Private Individuals

Dear (name):

I am writing to express my appreciation for your recent action to eliminate second hand smoke in our community. I am so pleased to know that my.family and friends' health is being protected by your action, and also appreciate your efforts to relieve the financial burden that public cigarette smoking places on all South Carolinians. I look forward to using my savings to visit local restaurants that I previously avoided due to the second hand smoke in the air!

And, as  a taxpayer, I am particularly happy to know that your actions will reduce our community's incidence of expensive short and long-term illness, and the burden it places on the state's public assistance health programs.

Please feel free to let those on other city, town and county councils know of the support you've received in our communities for your actions.

Best wishes,  (your name)

Employees of Smoke Free Establishments

Dear (name);

I am writing to express my thanks to you for providing me with a healthy environment in which to work. Employees across the state have been protected from exposure to various other carcinogens and dangerous toxins, but not to those that exist in cigarette smoke. Now, you have taken an action to protect those of us in this community from this health hazard.

As you may now, those who work in the service industry are much more likely to contract heart disease, lung disease, and a variety of cancers due to their continual exposure to second hand smoke. Again, thank you for addressing this problem and relieving us of the pressure to choose between our health or our work.

Business Owners

Dear (name):

I am writing to express my appreciation for your recent action to eliminate smoking in all work places in our community.

I appreciate that I do not have to work in a smoke-filled environment, and also the fact that a smoke free atmosphere will create a more productive work environment for all of my employees. I've also noted an increase in our business as nonsmokers feel free to visit us more frequently than they had in the past.

As a business owner who provides health insurance for my employees, I also appreciate that your efforts to reduce smoking in our state will likely have a positive impact on reducing health costs for all state citizens.

or

As a taxpayer, and business owner who is not able to provide health insurance for my employees, I am particularly happy to know that your actions will reduce our community's incidence of expensive short and long-term illness, and the burden it places on the state's public assistance health programs.

Thanks again for your action, and please feel free to let those on other city, town and county councils know of the support you've received in our communities for your actions.

Best wishes, (your name)
