Smoke Free
Legislative Updates
In the 2007 legislative session, South Carolina lawmakers left smoke-free laws in the hands of local governments after a House committee failed to take action on a proposed statewide law. Additionally, with the help of our grassroots network, we were able to put the brakes on several very weak pieces of smoke-free legislation that would have prevented local communities from passing more comprehensive smoke-free laws. If passed, these bills would have stopped all future local smoke-free movements and would have also overturned smoke-free ordinances that have previously been passed.
SCTC will be working on advocacy efforts for the 2008 legislative session to continue strong support for local control of smoke-free laws. Please continue to check this page for legislative updates.
LEGISLATIVE UPDATE: March 26, 2008
H 3119, a bill that did not include all workplaces, was sent back to sub-committee on March 25th by the House Judiciary Committee with a vote of 13-2. It is unlikely that any other statewide legislation regarding smoke-free workplaces will pass this session.
