Smoke Free Horry’s grant may have recently expired, but the organization’s goal continues.
George DuRant, a representative for Smoke Free Horry, said 2,000 residents are ready to take up the cause of making all municipalities and unincorporated parts of Horry County smoke free.
“They trust that the citizens are going to be change agents,” DuRant said.
As Smoke Free Horry moves to a citizens-run grassroots organization, Durant took time Thursday to highlight some of the accomplishments the group obtained through the grant.
To date, 2,483 people have signed smoke free petitions in Horry County, all county school campuses are smoke free and smoke-free ordinances have passed in Surfside Beach, Atlantic Beach and North Myrtle Beach, according to a press release.
“We want as many municipalities as we can get smoke free by the end of 2012,” said organization representative Jay Specter. “We want all of Horry County smoke free by the end of 2012, and we will work to do so in a professional, proactive manner.
