GENERAL PRACTITIONER CESSATION SCREENING AND REFERRAL

Patient quit rates go up when physicians discuss and recommend cessation options and support. You can motivate and make it easier for your patients to quit by asking about their smoking, ask if they are ready to quit, and reminding them of the positive health impact quitting can have for them and those around them.

If a patient indicates that they are ready to quit, referring them directly to cessation assistance can help them make the decision to quit now and help ensure that their decision lasts for the long term.

The Tobacco Quitline Referral program makes it easier than ever for physicians and other healthcare professionals to connect a smoker who has expressed a desire to quit with the information, resources and support they need.

PRENATAL CARE PROVIDERS

The March of Dimes reports that currently at least 10 percent of women in the U.S. smoke while pregnant. South Carolina Pregnancy Smoking Rates by County.

According to the U.S. Public Health Service, if all pregnant women in this country stopped smoking, there would be an estimated 11 percent reduction in stillbirths and 5 percent reduction in newborn deaths.

A grant from the March of Dimes enables the South Carolina Tobacco Collaborative to assist  prenatal care providers to help prevent smoking in pregnancy. The goals of the project are to:

  • determine priority geographical targets
  • integrate an evidence-based intervention into every prenatal practice
  • and encourage every clinician who interacts with women of child-bearing age to deliver effective smoking cessation advice and counseling.

If you would like for your practice to become a participant, or require further information, contact the Collaborative at 803-251-0130 or info@smokefreesc.org
