The South Carolina Pharmacy Association will offer six continuing education programs throughout the state to teach pharmacists how to identify patients who are tobacco users and discuss treatment options and resources. Pharmacists will receive patient handout materials on the health hazards of tobacco use, the safe use of nicotine replacement therapies, and the availability of Quitline services.
Lancaster Health and Wellness Commission will work to educate policy makers, community leaders, and residents of Lancaster County to promote the need for policies that support a smoke-free environment for all workers. In conjunction with the Great American Smokeout, LHWC will sponsor a flier contest for students in the school districts. The winning fliers will be used to develop billboards and posters that will be placed throughout the county. LHWC will also work with the faith-based community to provide education. LHWC will utilize community events to gather citizen support through petitions, endorsement forms, and pledges. Building on this support, LHWC hopes to see the passage of a comprehensive smoke-free ordinance in Lancaster County.
SCHO will hold several educational seminars to inform participants of the negative health risks associated with smoking and exposure to secondhand smoke, as well as discuss cessation options. SCHO will also distribute information at events targeting the Latino community. Five smoking cessation classes will also be provided by SCHO.
This group will include educational materials on the dangers of secondhand smoke and the availability of cessation services in the Welcome Baby kit provided to new mothers at the Aiken Regional Medical Center. Mental Health America of Aiken County will work to implement use of the 2 A’s + R Brief Tobacco Intervention and Quitline Fax Referral System among their targeted group.
