Coalitions

The SC Tobacco Collaborative is providing $250,000 in funding during fiscal year 2010-2011 to enable these local-level organizations to:

  • eliminate nonsmoker's exposure to second hand smoke
  • and/or provide assistance to those who wish to quit smoking

Each organization welcomes volunteers and support. Please consider joining a local coalition to directly participate in reducing the toll of tobacco use in South Carolina.

Statewide

American Lung Association in South Carolina

Three current facilitators of the American Lung Association’s Freedom From Smoking® cessation program will train twenty-two facilitators across the state of South Carolina.  These facilitators will administer clinics intended to serve at least 100 participants.  Funding from the SCTC will be used to purchase workbooks and other materials meaning individuals can participant in the program for free.

South Carolina Pharmacy Association

The South Carolina Pharmacy Association will offer six continuing education programs throughout the state to teach pharmacists how to identify patients who are tobacco users and discuss treatment options and resources.  Pharmacists will receive patient handout materials on the health hazards of tobacco use, the safe use of nicotine replacement therapies, and the availability of Quitline services.

Upstate

All on Board Coalition and York County Tobacco Free

The All on Board Coalition and York County Tobacco Free will work to increase both youth and adult awareness of the negative health effects of secondhand smoke through presentations and workshops.  Along with building awareness, they will campaign for smoke-free work environments.  They will also use media to increase awareness of local cessation resources, including the Quitline.  The All on Board Coalition and York County Tobacco Free will sponsor a forum on the Clinical Practice Guideline on Treating Tobacco Use and Dependence for members of the medical community.

Greenville Family Partnership (GFP)

GFP will work to become an established resource for individuals and groups that support elimination of secondhand smoke exposure in their communities by providing staff and materials for events, education, and coalition building.  GFP will use community events as an opportunity to educate target populations on the health and economic benefits of secondhand smoke elimination.  Members of GFP will also educate local policymakers on issues related to secondhand smoke exposure.

Lancaster Health and Wellness Commission (LHWC)

Lancaster Health and Wellness Commission will work to educate policy makers, community leaders, and residents of Lancaster County to promote the need for policies that support a smoke-free environment for all workers.  In conjunction with the Great American Smokeout, LHWC will sponsor a flier contest for students in the school districts.  The winning fliers will be used to develop billboards and posters that will be placed throughout the county.  LHWC will also work with the faith-based community to provide education.  LHWC will utilize community events to gather citizen support through petitions, endorsement forms, and pledges.  Building on this support, LHWC hopes to see the passage of a comprehensive smoke-free ordinance in Lancaster County.

Midlands

Clarendon County Tobacco Free Kids Coalition, Inc.

Clarendon County Tobacco Free Kids Coalition, Inc. will partner with Mothers Eliminating Secondhand Smoke (M.E.S.S.) to hold events to educate youth on the importance of eliminating exposure to secondhand smoke in homes, churches, and vehicles.  Clarendon County Tobacco Free Kids Coalition, Inc. will use the Patrick the Pack Rat curriculum in daycare facilities to prevent future tobacco use among young children.  The coalition will reach out to members of the medical community to distribute information on secondhand smoke and the availability of Quitline services.  In addition, the coalition will educate local business owners on the dangers of secondhand smoke.  Clarendon County Tobacco Free Kids Coalition, Inc. plans to work with city and county council members to establish smoke-free policies.  A media campaign developed by the coalition will encourage tobacco users to quit.

Coalition for a Drug Free Saluda County

Using results from a survey of Saluda County residents, the Coalition for a Drug Free Saluda County will develop a tailored secondhand smoke awareness campaign.  The campaign will focus on promoting change in personal habits and awareness of public policy issues.
    

Healthy Carolina – University of South Carolina

Healthy Carolina will implement a Healthcare Provider Fax Referral System to refer individuals to the cessation services available through Palmetto Health Richland and the South Carolina Quitline.  A social norming campaign developed by Healthy Carolina will be used to create awareness of available cessation services.  Healthy Carolina will also use peer health educators to assist with efforts to enforce the campus’ tobacco-free policy by distributing information to those in violation of the policy.  Healthy Carolina also plans to increase signage on campus where non-compliance with the policy is common.

Musicians & Songwriters Guild of South Carolina

The Musicians & Songwriters Guild of South Carolina will use social media to support the Trash the Ash and Shot of Truth campaigns.  They will develop and market songs that promote the Quitline.  The Musicians & Songwriters Guild of South Carolina will also hold a jingle contest to promote Trash the Ash and Shot of Truth .  The winning music will be made available to download by the public.  Individuals will also be able to follow the Trash the Ash and Shot of Truth campaigns via a monthly e-newsletter.

South Carolina Hispanic Outreach (SCHO)/Acercamiento Hispano de Carolina del Sur

SCHO will hold several educational seminars to inform participants of the negative health risks associated with smoking and exposure to secondhand smoke, as well as discuss cessation options. SCHO will also distribute information at events targeting the Latino community.  Five smoking cessation classes will also be provided by SCHO.

Welcome Baby – Mental Health America of Aiken County

This group will include educational materials on the dangers of secondhand smoke and the availability of cessation services in the Welcome Baby kit provided to new mothers at the Aiken Regional Medical Center.  Mental Health America of Aiken County will work to implement use of the 2 A’s + R Brief Tobacco Intervention and Quitline Fax Referral System among their targeted group.

Coastal

Coastal South Tobacco Coalition (CSTC)

CSTC will work to build community support for county and township smoke-free ordinances as well as increase involvement in the coalition’s activities.  CSTC will collaborate with the Mothers Eliminating Secondhand Smoke (M.E.S.S.) program to educate and promote smoke-free facilities and policies within the faith-based community.  CSTC plans to utilize local publications that target youth and health providers to promote the “Take it Outside” message.  “Pregnant Pause” brunch-n-learn events will be used to educate pregnant women and new mothers on the dangers of smoking and secondhand smoke.  CSTC will provide cessation services in English and Spanish utilizing the Freedom From Smoking® program.  

Hollings Cancer Center – Medical University of South Carolina

Using the Freedom From Smoking® cessation curriculum as a foundation, Hollings Cancer Center will offer four-week long cessation trainings in conjunction with free nicotine replacement therapy.  

Smoke-Free Lowcountry Coalition (SFLC)

SFLC is focusing on introduction and passage of comprehensive smoke-free ordinances in Summerville and Dorchester County.  These efforts include education of policymakers and building community support.  SFLC will disseminate secondhand smoke educational messages through the use of television commercials, radio advertisements and billboards.

South Carolina African American Tobacco Control Network (SCAATCN)

SCAATCN will work to reduce children’s exposure to secondhand smoke in homes and vehicles by partnering with Head Start to provide information and resources on both secondhand smoke and cessation services to parents.  SCAATCN will also provide age-appropriate information to children enrolled in the Head Start program to discourage future smoking.  SCAATCAN will develop an educational module that Head Start staff can continue to use to educate parents.
